History

The Meyers and Givnish Families of Funeral & Cremation Services has been serving Philadelphia, Jenkintown, Trooper, Bridgeport and the entire Delaware Valley area families for years. We are honored to be a part of the rich history of this community and plan to be a part of it for many years to come.

The Meyers Family Funeral Home

On March 4, 1911 John and Rachel had a daughter, Eleanor, the first-born with the name Meyers. On August 8, 1917, Walter J. Meyers, Sr. was born. In 1924, John and Rachel purchased a home on Disston Street in the Tacony section of Philadelphia. This home would later be the beginning of a family business.

Walter, a 1931 graduate of Hamilton Disston Grade School and a 1935 Graduate of Frankford High School, attended Taylor Business School. On May 25, 1940 Walter J. Meyers, Sr. graduated from Erkels College of Embalming. On September 19, 1940, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He served in the Navy for over 5 years. A WWII Veteran and a Pearl Harbor survivor, Walter received his Honorable Discharge at the rank of Chief Pharmacists Mate (T) V6 from the United States Navy on November 26, 1945.

In January, 1946, Walter opened the Walter J. Meyers Funeral Home in his parent’s home on Disston Street. In 1948, as his business began to grow, he moved the funeral home to 6645 Torresdale Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19135. The Walter J. Meyers Funeral Home began with one man’s determination to help the bereaved, and one woman’s strength to stand beside him. Together, they made this building into a home where family, friends and neighbors could come together to relive memories and hold them close. Walter and his family continue to take pride in their place where neighbors share stories, prayers, laughter and tears all through song and ceremony.

It was always our father's dream to open up another funeral home. Three of his nine children got into the business, Walter Jr., James and Timothy. First serving the Tacony area, we decided to expand our services to other locations. Tim worked for Stan Szpindor in the Trooper area for 20 years and when Stan decided to retire he wanted nothing more than for Tim and Jim to continue serving his families. So in 2011, Stan Szpindor transferred ownership to Tim and Jim where they could continue to provide the Montgomery families with the services they have been able to provide for their families in Philadelphia.

Tim is also licensed in the state of Delaware, which allows us to serve families in that area. Today we are servicing families in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia counties as well as the State of Delaware. We share and strive to emulate what my parents taught us by word and example. Since 1946, we have been helping the bereaved cope with the loss of those they love. And we have made some very dear and close friends along the way. If there is one thing we believe, it is that we are here to remind you that even though our loved ones are no longer within our touch; they will always be within our reach. McGoldrick Funeral Home

McGoldrick Funeral Home was originally established around 1900 in rented rooms in the Foy Building on Old York Road by Joseph J. McGoldrick, who then constructed the first funeral home in that area built for that purpose at 713 West Avenue and Johnson Street. In 1926, the business was moved to a facility at Summit and Cedar Street. Mr. McGoldrick owned and operated the funeral home until his death in 1933, at which time, his daughter, Anne took over the management of the firm and became a licensed funeral director in 1936. In 1949, her brother, also named Joseph J. McGoldrick, joined his sister in the operation, and in 1956 they moved the funeral home to its current location at 507 West Avenue. Joseph became the sole proprietor upon his mother’s death in 1959. In 1975, the grandson of the founder, Thomas M. McGoldrick joined the firm, and when his father died in 2013, he became the sole proprietor. Tom McGoldrick was one of seven children of parents Joseph J. and Delores McGoldrick, but was the only one that joined his father in the business.

With Tom considering retirement, the Walter Meyers family of funeral directors were contacted. After a long interview with Tom and assuring him we would continue the McGoldrick family of service to his families, Tom decided to transfer the McGoldrick funeral home into the care of the Meyers Family of Funeral Directors. Until Tom does decide to fully retire he will remain as the supervisor of the Joseph J. McGoldrick Funeral Home Inc. During this transition we will assist Tom in the many aspects of running the funeral home.


 

Hoffmann Meyers Givnish Funeral Home

William S. Hoffmann was born on March 22, 1918. He lived in the Frankford section of Philadelphia and graduated from Frankford High School in 1936. Marie Thomas Hoffmann was born on June 27, 1919 and resided in West Philadelphia. She graduated from West Catholic High School for girls in 1937.She attended St. Mary’s Hospital for nursing. In 1940 Bill & Marie met in a hospital while she was caring for his Mother.


Bill entered the Army Air Corps and was stationed in England. Marie entered the Army Nurse Corp and was stationed in the US. While on leave in 1942 they were married in Florida and were married for 55 years.


After his Honorable Discharge he entered HE Dolan College of embalming. After graduation he worked as a Funeral Director, supervisor in New Jersey. In 1955 he returned to Pennsylvania and purchased a twin home in Eddington, which later became Cornwell Heights and finally became Bensalem. They turned this twin house into the Hoffmann Funeral Home.


Bill and Marie had three daughters Marie, Michelle and Roxanne. Michelle and Roxanne both became funeral directors and joined their parents in the management of the Hoffmann Funeral Home.


Sadly Mr. Hoffmann passed in 1998, Mrs. Hoffmann passed in 2001, Roxanne passed in 2018, and Michelle passed in 2019. When considering who should continue the Hoffmann family of funeral service to the Bucks County area, Marie ‘Hoffmann’ Zminiewski reached out to Timothy Meyers. Tim had worked with the Hoffmann family for over 28 years. He already knew the Hoffmann family intimately and knew how to serve grieving families, coming from a funeral family himself. Tim had grown up the son of Walter & Eileen Meyers another Funeral Director and his wife who ran the Walter J. Meyers Funeral Home in Philadelphia.


Furthermore Tim’s brother Jim was already working with him and they were partners in their other funeral Homes. Along with Tim and Jim Meyers, is their partner Francis X. Givnish also from a family of Funeral Directors. The three partners decided to take over the business and support the families in Bucks County. Francis X. Givnish, Jr. will become the supervisor, Elizabeth Staub, the daughter of Tim’s wife Elizabeth ‘Sullivan’ Meyers will become the office manager. We have a great support team with our Funeral Directors Tim, Jim, Fran, Fran Jr., Julia Meyers Heather Hughes and our incredible staff Veronica Meyers Wardlow, Elizabeth Staub and Pam Demitis. We are also supported by our many Funeral Assistants.
